Book Summary- The Things We Leave Unfinished

“Love like that happens only in books and movies”.

We have heard this so many times. When I read this book, I realized this was the book they were referring to. Love-so pure and timeless that it seems unreal. Something that can actually happen only in books and movies.

Georgia is recently divorced and the media would not leave her alone. After all, she was married to one of the most popular moviemakers in the country who had made a fortune from book-to-movie adaptions. The books were written by Georgia’s great-grandmother Scarlett Stanton, the best romance author in the last 50 years.

As Georgia is healing from the heartbreak of the divorce, she comes across an unfinished manuscript. But this is no ordinary manuscript. This is her great-grandmother’s story- her life as WAAF plotter, as RAF pilot’s wife, as William’s mother but most importantly, the story of her undying love for Jameson.

Noah Harrison offers to finish the manuscript but Georgia has her doubts. With strong attraction toward each other, Georgia and Noah carefully take one step at a time to work on the manuscript and their relationship. Both are cautiously aware of the risks and repercussions. The letters they find in Scarlett’s closet and the unfinished manuscript reveals something sensational about Scarlett and her sister.

Scarlett and Constance are sisters who are privileged and wealthy but that does not stop them from serving their country when the second world war strikes. When German Air Force bombers are in the sky, these sisters, as WAAF map plotters, ensure that Royal Air Force pilots have all the support from the ground.

Scarlett meets the enigmatic American pilot Jameson on one of the air bases. Jameson is instantly drawn toward this confident and intelligent woman and does not leave any stone unturned to express his love. Soon they are moving from one base to another as Jameson gets transferred frequently and asks Scarlett to move with him, first as his girlfriend and later as his wife. To safeguard Scarlett and their son, William, from war, Jameson plans to move them to Colorado. He believes that they will be safe there with his family. They leave to the safer grounds but only after a life-altering tragedy.

The story is beautifully narrated, seamlessly transitioning from one character’s perspective to another in every chapter. The book seems to get slightly monotonous halfway, but by then you are so involved in the story that you keep going. One of the very few books, where lovemaking is sensitive and beautiful, unlike many others where it just seems lustful and vulgar.

The characters feel real, with all their emotions, faults, and strengths. And that is why the story touches your heart. The twist in the end hits you hard and you take a moment to grasp what just happened.

I am so glad I read this one.
